A Downtown Icon Returns: Neel’s Sign Lights Up Macon Once Again
MACON, Ga. - A familiar piece of Macon’s skyline has officially made its return. On December 17, community members and project partners gathered as the historic Joseph N. Neel’s Department Store sign was reintroduced—now shining atop the new Neel’s Lofts development at 462 Cherry Street.
The lighting of the restored sign marks a significant milestone in the transformation of the former Neel’s Department Store block into a vibrant mixed-use residential destination. Neel’s Lofts will deliver 95 luxury apartments, coworking space, retail storefronts, and restaurant space—bringing new energy to a site that served as a cornerstone of downtown retail for more than a century.
Developed by H2 Capital in partnership with Piedmont Construction Group, the project blends modern construction with a deep respect for Macon’s heritage. The restoration and installation of the sign were completed by The Sign Store, whose team carefully preserved the sign’s character while updating it for long-term performance.
“For many Macon families, the Neel’s sign is more than a landmark—it’s a memory,” said Robbo Hatcher of H2 Capital. “Seeing it lit again is a powerful reminder of where downtown has been and where it’s headed. We’re proud to carry that legacy forward as Neel’s Lofts takes shape.”
The sign has been refitted with modern back-lighting that can change colors throughout the year—celebrating holidays, festivals, school spirit, and seasonal moments that make Macon unique.
Mike Lewis of The Sign Store emphasized the care taken in the restoration process. “This project was about honoring history while preparing the sign to shine for future generations. It’s an important piece of Macon’s identity, and we treated it that way.”
The re-lighting of the Neel’s sign stands as a visible symbol of downtown’s continued revitalization—where preservation, thoughtful development, and community partnerships are shaping Macon’s next chapter.
Following the ceremony, guests toured the project’s model residence and learned more about upcoming leasing opportunities. Once complete, Neel’s Lofts will create a dynamic new destination at Cherry and Third Streets, offering a mix of residential, retail, dining, and coworking spaces in the heart of downtown.
