Community Gathers to Unveil Plaque at Atrium Health Amphitheater
MACON, Ga. – On Friday, May 31, Macon-Bibb County held a special ceremony to unveil a dedicated plaque at the Atrium Health Amphitheater. Commissioners, Urban Development Authority board members, Bicentennial Committee members, and many other community members joined Mayor Lester Miller in unveiling the plaque.
“This is and will be something we will look back many years from now and smile at what we have…and today, we will unveil something that will help us remember this moment in time,” said Mayor Miller.
Piedmont Construction Group’s co-founder, David Thompson, delivered remarks regarding the construction of the facility.
“The magnitude of the work put into the amphitheater was extraordinary. There were upwards of 200 people on site most days working on the project – that’s 346 business days, though the site was busy on some weekends and holidays, too. Some interesting tidbits about the project include:
- 62,970 cubic yards of dirt were moved;
- 9,500 cubic yards of concrete were poured (which is almost 20,000 tons of concrete);
- Piedmont Construction Group actually reserved the mill before we were even awarded the project to procure the steel;
- The amphitheater seats 10,000 guests: There are 6,000 lawn seats, 2,500 fixed seats, and 1,500 movable seats. That’s 5,000 bolts just in seats.
Piedmont Construction Group would like to thank our design/build team and all the subcontractors involved for their hard work and dedication.”
After the unveiling, guests convened on stage for a group picture. They were also able to go behind the scenes of the amphitheater to learn how it was built, see how the backstage was designed for the artists, other particular seating areas, and more.
“You have made this such a success,” Mayor Miller told the crowd. “You are responsible for the economic growth we’re seeing in this area- you are bringing this area back to life. We can’t wait to see it continue to grow and grow with every show we bring.
The Atrium Health Amphitheater opened earlier this year, with its first show on March 24 being Lynyrd Skynyrd and ZZ Top. The 12,000-capacity venue has also had artists like Riley Green, Turnpike Troubadours, Anthony Hamilton, and more.
