Piedmont Construction Earns First Place Honors for Upgrades for the Hoke Smith Annex HVAC
MACON, Ga. – As part of a design/team collaboration with Clark Nexsen, Piedmont Construction Group was chosen to perform a mechanical renovation of The University of Georgia's historic Hoke Smith Annex Building, originally constructed in the 1940s.
Over the years, the mechanical systems failed, resulting in half of the building's occupants resorting to window units installed in the original industrial steel windows and causing an eye sore for one of the most traveled roads on The University of Georgia's campus. During the preconstruction, it became relevant that the team would not be able to relocate all the occupants. Therefore, the project was phased into two phases. Utilizing one of the newer mechanical technologies, a Variable Refrigerant Flow System was chosen and designed to fit the needs of the building.
The Annex is now conditioned, with each occupant having a thermostat for personal control. This project was fortunate enough to also upgrade finishes throughout the building, revitalizing its appearance while honoring its past.
The 2024 AGC Build Georgia Awards Program acknowledged Piedmont Construction Group's efforts on The Annex with First Place honors. The project team included Dallas Smith, Project Executive; Mark Lumsden, Project Manager; and Phillip Barnard, Superintendent.
